Mime Tips

If you’re thinking about being a mime when you grow up, there is something you need to keep in mind – it’s not a good paying job. It’s actually a job that is going to cause you to be scraping the bottom of the barrel – and not just one that’s invisible. When you want to practice your mime love, you need to keep in mind that this might be something you do out of love, not for money. However, you will make more mime money when you begin to follow tips to improve your technique. Shhh.

Get Dressed Right

Yes, a mime is only a mime when they can be recognized as a mime. You need to be wearing all black clothing, as that’s the standard. A nice crisp black turtleneck and plants that are easy to move in are the best combination. But your shoes also need to be black – and a black hat would be nice too. It’s also a good idea to make sure your face is white and that it remains white as long as you are performing. This will ensure that you are able to keep your face in character. It’s a good idea to come up with a certain look that you will use when you are out on the streets or performing elsewhere. This will ensure you are recognizable.

Sharper Movements Make More Sense

When you are trying to show your audience something, you need to make sure the movements you make are crisp and sharp. This will ensure you are interpreted as doing something that you are actually trying to show you are doing. There’s nothing worse than a sloppy mime. It also helps if you make sure that you exaggerate your movements a bit more than you might think you need to. While it might seem like a lot to you, in a crowd, it might be exactly what a person needs to see in order to understand your act. It’s a good idea too to watch what your audience is doing so that you can decide whether your movements are being effective.

Practice Your Art

Yes, mimes need to practice their acts. This will ensure that you are being as clear and as effective as possible. You will want to stand in front of a mirror and practice all of the movements you want to show others. You will also want to practice with people in your family to make sure that they think you are doing things well. They are your best (read: harshest) critics. Ask them what they think again and again – they will LOVE it.

When you want to be a good mime, it takes hard work, even when you don’t need to remember any lines. The more that you practice, the better you will get at what you do and this will add up to a more successful mime career. But you still don’t want to quit your day job. Please don’t do that just yet.
